2010 Public Affairs & Legislative Agenda
The following legislative agenda for 2010 has been developed and approved by
the Public Affairs Council and The Chamber’s Board of Directors:
1. Actively advocate cooperative relations and accountability among and between
all elected officials in Tuscaloosa County and West Alabama and the legislative
delegation in order to create a unified agenda critical to improving and maximizing
the community’s effectiveness and influence in Montgomery.
2. Aggressively support passage of legislation which provides the citizens
of Tuscaloosa County
with the right to vote on identified issues of significant public concern and
achieve home rule.
3. Actively advocate and support legislation or local ordinances for the implementation
of “red light” traffic safety, monitoring and enforcement initiatives.
4. Maintain active support of efforts to expand and secure Bryce Hospital in
Tuscaloosa.
5. Advocate improved working relations among local governments, state legislators,
the Alabama Department of Transportation, both in Montgomery and at the division
level, and the private sector to more effectively facilitate, coordinate, and
hold accountable identified transportation priorities in the region.
6. Continue support for funding of extension of the runway at the Tuscaloosa
Regional Airport and modernization and installation of a radar system to support
and assure safety as well as economic development opportunities.
7. Aggressively advocate expeditious efforts to move the eastern bypass project
forward and hold
accountable all of the various governmental bodies and agencies that are barriers
to progress.
8. Correct and resolve through the Alabama Legislature, the Alabama Attorney
General’s Office, or the local District Attorney’s Office, identified
deficiencies in the worthless check laws of Alabama and related judicial applications
and hold accountable the failure to address.
9. Advocate cooperative efforts among all governmental entities at local, state
and federal levels to protect Lake Tuscaloosa including: development and funding
of environmentally responsible initiatives and systems; extension of sewer systems;
and other identified steps to protect and preserve the water supply of Tuscaloosa
County.
10. Actively support and advocate establishment of a regional career-technical
high school for Tuscaloosa County and West Alabama, including development of
funding at federal, state and local levels.
11. Actively participate in the political and election process during 2010
to support and facilitate the
election of individuals that support and advocate The Chamber’s public
and legislative affairs agenda.
12. Advocate and support meaningful ethics reform legislation including elimination
of PAC-to-PAC transfers.
